Looks like New Horizons in Lexington is the closest dive center to you - although it's still a couple of hours away.

Here's the good news: it's possible to do your open water certification in just a few days. Ask the dive center about online training - this will save you two nights of classroom. It costs $120 more but you would probably pay that in gas.

Or - you could get certified while on vacation. When I got certified I did the whole thing in Mexico in four days. Looking back, I wouldn't recommend it because I spent SO many hours in the classroom (they didn't have online training back then) and it wasn't fun to be indoors while in a tropical paradise.

If I had it to do over again: I'd do the online training, go to a local dive shop to do the pool training and then do my four certification dives in the tropics.
